Assembling The Team
Mueller Homes worked collaboratively with East Bay Design Architects to complete this historic renovation and new construction project in St. Michaels, MD. This project was featured in What’s Up Annapolis Magazine and was also awarded the Excellence in Custom Home Building by Annapolis Home Magazine.
The Client’s Vision
When these clients began contemplating their retreat style waterfront home in St. Michael’s, they had some very specific goals in mind. First and foremost, the property had an existing home built in the 1800s, and they wanted to incorporate elements of the original historic home in their new design. They also wanted the original Federal style colonial design to be timelessly integrated into the new design. This project is a romantic blend of old meets new. Features
This waterfront custom luxury home sits prominently at the end of a tree-lined drive and features a first floor master suite, large family kitchen, adjoining family room, a colonial style library/study, formal dining room, mudroom, screened porch, and pool patio along with 4 bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs to accommodate family and guests.
The farmhouse kitchen provides plenty of room for meal prep and entertaining. The kitchen features two large islands, a Bucks County soapstone farmhouse sink, and Wolf appliances. Doorknobs from the original home were salvaged for use on two of the kitchen pantry doors and the range hood was designed with reclaimed from the floor joists from the original home.
The family room features Anderson windows which provide picturesque views of the Miles River. An adjoining sunroom and porch provides a relaxing retreat with tongue and groove cedar ceiling and year round comfort. Ultraview invisible screens ensure the waterfront views are unobscured with more visibility and improved airflow.
What’s a farmhouse without a mudroom? Custom millwork includes wainscoting, handcrafted cubbies with wire trimmed doors, wooden benches and lockers for storage. Durable and timeless finishes complement the mudroom’s practicality.
An Outdoor Lifestyle on the Waterfront
The architectural elements of the rear of the home lean towards traditional design, with a plethora of windows that allow everyone to enjoy the 180 degrees of waterfront views. Two Ultraview screened porches, a pool, hot tub and blue stone patio provide the perfect setting for every member of the family to enjoy this retreat like setting.
When Old Meets New
This project began with an existing 1800s farmhouse on a spacious waterfront lot. However, the original home was not ideally situated, so it had to be relocated to a more desirable position, overlooking Harris Creek. This was a delicate and challenging process but well worth the effort. Several elements of the original home were reclaimed and used thoughtfully in the new construction including two fireplaces (in the dining room and library) were restored from the original farmhouse and custom millwork was designed to replicate the charm of the original structure. St. Michaels Brick, reclaimed from the original farmhouse, was placed thoughtfully in the new structure to serve as a reminder of the home’s humble beginnings. The library features custom millwork, built-ins, and arched doorways that carry the federal style farmhouse design theme throughout the first level of the home.
